We are a diverse group of activists and friends of Amnesty committed to raising awareness of human rights issues, generating action to prevent and end grave abuses of human rights and demanding justice for those whose rights have been violated. We meet regularly to discuss current issues and to coordinate upcoming activities within the local area aimed at raising awareness and fundraising. We also have an established Casefile; the Campaign for Equality which is committed to ending discrimination against women in Iranian Law.
If you live, work or like to visit the Sutherland Shire please get in touch. We welcome new members to our group or if you wanted to keep up to date about our events - we would love to hear from you!
What we've been up to:
Since forming in late 2009, we have held:
A stall at the Day in the Park Music Festival at Toyota Park
A community stall in Cronulla Mall collecting signatures for our Casefile
A Film Screening: Offside, focusing on the right of women in Iran, at Cronulla Cinemas
Community Picnic at Gunnamatta Park to raise awareness of the plight of refugees with a visit from Sierra Leonean drummers and Shadow Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Scott Morrison
What's coming up:
Our group is looking to coordinate another film screening before the end of the year. We are also interested in holding a walk-a-thon to raise awareness to the upward trend of domestic violence in the Sutherland Shire area.
We are always looking to partner with like-minded community groups within the area and will look into this more. As well as potentially visiting some local MPs to talk about human rights related issues.
We meet once a month to discuss, take action and coordinate various efforts to generate more public awareness about these issues. We generally meet on the third Tuesday of every month at the Sutherland Shire Air League Squadron from 6:30-7:30pm. For more information or to confirm meeting times please email email@example.com
